Building a Family on Your Own Terms: A Guide for Single Parents by Choice
Some of the most intentional, prepared, and frankly inspiring parents we have met came to parenthood solo, by choice. Single parenthood by choice is a real, valid, and growing path, and yet it is still under-served by a system that quietly assumes two partners. If you are considering building your family on your own terms, this is for you, and you belong in this conversation as fully as anyone.
Your paths to parenthood
Single parents by choice build families through every route: IUI or IVF with donor sperm, IVF with donor eggs and a gestational carrier, embryo donation, and adoption. The right path depends on your body, your goals, and your resources, and the good news is that all of them are well-traveled, even if the culture does not talk about them enough.
The realities worth naming
We are honest people, so we will name the real considerations rather than pretend they do not exist. Single parents by choice often carry the full financial load alone, which makes the money and insurance conversation especially important. The "social infertility" insurance gap that affects LGBTQ+ families often affects single parents too, because many plans were written around a couple trying to conceive. (Bloomberg Law) Encouragingly, ASRM's 2023 definition update explicitly included individuals without partners, giving single parents by choice a stronger footing against discriminatory coverage denials. The other reality is emotional. Doing this solo can be lonely in a culture built around couples, which is exactly why community matters so much here.
Families Out Loud brings honest, jargon-free family-building education to six cities in 2026 — with the experts in the room to answer your questions. One $40 weekend ticket.
Why community is not optional here
For single parents by choice, the support system is not a luxury, it is infrastructure. A strong network of other solo parents, ethical professionals, and people who simply get it can be the difference between a hard journey and an isolating one. This is one of the reasons we keep Families Out Loud events intimate and inclusive: so that a single parent by choice walks into a room and immediately finds peers, not a sea of couples.
Every provider we bring into that room, the agencies, clinics, attorneys, and donation specialists, is vetted against ASRM and SEEDS ethics standards, and many of them work with single parents by choice as a core part of their practice, not an exception. You can explore them by category on our Sponsors page.
You are not doing this alone, even if you are doing it solo
Choosing to parent on your own is not a fallback or a consolation. For many people it is a clear-eyed, deliberate, joyful decision. You deserve the same information, the same ethical providers, and the same community as anyone else building a family. At Families Out Loud, every family and every route belongs, and that has always included you.
